Extra Cab Ute Comparison
Looking to buy an extra cab ute? Wondering which one has capacity best suited to your needs?
Consider what type of load you’ll be carrying, whether you’ll be towing a trailer regularly, and where the load will be distributed across the vehicle.
The table below shows the individual axle ratings at the standard GVM, along with how the axle weights change when a GVM upgrade is installed. You’ll notice that sometimes only the rear axle changes, sometimes just the front, and sometimes both axle ratings remain the same, just the overall weight that the vehicle is certified to carry increases.
So how do I interpret this table?
Take the Ford Ranger E/Cab 2WD as an example.
The manufacturers GVM is 3200kg. Pre-upgrade, the vehicle can take a maximum of 1480kg on the front axle, and up to 1850kg on the rear axle, as long as the overall weight of the vehicle is under the 3200kg GVM.
Once an upgrade has been installed, the tougher suspension means the vehicle is certified to carry a maximum of 3500kg overall, with the rear axle specifically upgraded to carry an extra 200kg.Â
